The Telecommunications Green Paper highlights the importance of
deploying ICT's (Information Communication Technology) in support
of enhancing the quality of health care delivery in South Africa.
The RDP has already identified connectivity for schools and health
facilities as a priority.
The CSIR have close links with both the Departments of Health and
Education at National and Provincial level and participate in the
national telemedicine task group. The Department of Health are rolling
out a national telemedicine programme and support this initiative
in reaching rural areas and supporting rural health workers with
innovative ICT's.
Innovative ICT's providing rural connectivity will support communities
and community based health organizations in delivering effective
health care services to rural communities. Examples of this application
can be found at Tsilitwa in the Eastern Cape.
