Consortium Summary

  • CSIR
  • ARC
  • HSRC
  • Renewable Energies SA
  • Naledi ya Africa

CSIR

The CSIR is the largest community- and industry-based scientific and technological research and development organisation in Africa. Its business is to perform research and development to gain technology and thereafter to ensure its implementation in order to:

  • be the technology partner in both the formal and informal sectors to promote economic growth;
  • provide technology solutions that improve the quality of life in urban and rural developing communities; and
  • provide scientific and technological support to enhance decision-making in the public and private sectors.

The Division of icomtek has considerable experience in project management and Information Communications Technologies in support of rural development projects.

ARC

The ARC has an established track record in agricultural research, technology development and technology transfer in general. The ARC has developed specific expertise and capacity in the publication of relevant agricultural information using electronic media to enhance its accessibility by the intended audience, especially those members of rural communities who may be functionally illiterate.

HSRC

One of the three core competencies of the HSRC as identified by an international review panel in 1997 is assessment and testing. More specifically with regard to ICTs, the HSRC has an established track record of evaluating ICT usage at community centres / telecentres. These evaluations have been done in both urban and rural areas, and mainly from a users perspective.

Renewable Energies SA
In the past 12 months Renewable Energies Africa have been directly involved in the roll-out of DECT for Telkom and collectively managed 12 projects in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Mpumalanga with an estimated figure of 5 000 lines of which 10% were solar-powered installations. Renewable Energies Africa has access to sixty (60) trained sub-contractors.

Naledi ya Africa

Naledi is a unique and powerful partnership between the new empowering philosophy of Naledi, the people of South Africa and the technological expertise of the CSIR.

Naledi Ya Afrika serves as a platform to access training, information and opportunities, built on a network of people and organizations, connected through a vast technological infrastructure. A system that allows access to everyone - not on the elitist basis of who, or where you are, but merely because you are. A new culture that rewards, recognizes and measures success not on how much you have been able to amass for yourself, but on how much you have caused others to amass, with you.
