Lubisi History

The Lubisi dam was constructed in 1968 next to Lubisi village approximately 20 km from Cofimvaba. on the Indwe river . The dam supplies water for Lanti ,Mtyhintyinmi, Ntlonze and Qamata irrigation schemes. In mid -1993 when the newly formed Aerotek Division of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research was wrestling with the idea how it could possible be relevant to the incoming ANC`s RDP.

In 1994 CSIR visited the area to investigate the possibility of generating hydro-electric power from the dam, which was at the time being considered by the Norwegian funding agency Norad as a possible hydroelectric site. Although the funding did not subsequently materialise, the CSIR became interested and involved the community in the close proximity of the dam. This led to a CSIR sociologies, Ms Motau, together with Max Sexwale to conduct an extensive needs analysis and strategic planning exercise with the community and this resulted to the formation of the Lubisi Dam Development Forum (LDDF) which still exist today.
