Background

In the early 50’s Nowinasi and Samson Nzongwana Mayongo were blessed with a third child and a second son. As the story goes it was on a Friday and the young fellow‘s grand mother named him “Mahlubandile” meaning that an additional member of the Hlubi clan had arrived.

Church and the government of the day requirements necessitated the second name “Shepherd” Mahlubi (shortened version of the clan name), who got his primary education at Maqhashu, Lututu and Tafeni Junior Secondary Schools. He went to Whittlesea and completed his Junior Secondary Certificate in 1971. He could not go to school in 1972 due to financial problems. A good Samaritan and a family member came to the rescue of this fatherless boy whose father died while he was eleven years old and helped to obtain his Primary Teacher’s Course (P.T.C) at Bensonvale Teacher College at Sterkspruit.

In all the institutions he attended he took part in choral music and debate. His teaching career started in 1975 at Kolonga J.S.S and he was promoted to a principal post at Luqolo J.S.S in 1984. His thirst for further education and personal development enabled him to study Matric privately and completed it in 1982 and was fortunate to get a three year study leave and registered for a B. A degree at Fort Hare University in Alice majoring in English and Geography and graduated in 1997. He is married with four children, three sons and a daughter.

He is still upgrading his professional qualifications and is registered with Lyceum College for a Curriculum Studies certificate as well as with Potcherstroom University for a B. ed degree .He is someone with community development at heart. He is currently a street committee chairperson for Mayibuye Street at Ezibeleni.

His love and interest on reading has resulted to him being able to write letters and articles on newspapers. Last year July he started freelance reporting for the Lady Frere area in the Qeenstown weekly paper called “The Representative”. From August 20 to 24 year 2001, he was one of the eight students who were taught computer skills by an expert from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research ( CSIR ).

Ideals and long term goals

Mahlubi would like to be actively involved in rural community development as a director in one of the current local municipality departments, a media management director in the Lady Frere Education District office or a head master in one of the schools in Ezibeleni or Queenstown. He also intends retiring at age sixty so as to be able to have a few years to open up and run his own business. His spiritual wish is to serve his community as a minister, and visit the United States of America ( USA ) where his church headquarters and leaders are with the hope of spiritual revival.
