In the early 50’s Nowinasi and Samson Nzongwana Mayongo were blessed
with a third child and a second son. As the story goes it was on
a Friday and the young fellow‘s grand mother named him “Mahlubandile”
meaning that an additional member of the Hlubi clan had arrived.
Church and the government of the day requirements necessitated
the second name “Shepherd” Mahlubi (shortened version of the clan
name), who got his primary education at Maqhashu, Lututu and Tafeni
Junior Secondary Schools. He went to Whittlesea and completed his
Junior Secondary Certificate in 1971. He could not go to school
in 1972 due to financial problems. A good Samaritan and a family
member came to the rescue of this fatherless boy whose father died
while he was eleven years old and helped to obtain his Primary Teacher’s
Course (P.T.C) at Bensonvale Teacher College at Sterkspruit.
In all the institutions he attended he took part in choral music
and debate. His teaching career started in 1975 at Kolonga J.S.S
and he was promoted to a principal post at Luqolo J.S.S in 1984.
His thirst for further education and personal development enabled
him to study Matric privately and completed it in 1982 and was fortunate
to get a three year study leave and registered for a B. A degree
at Fort Hare University in Alice majoring in English and Geography
and graduated in 1997. He is married with four children, three sons
and a daughter.
